Artist Statement

My work is inspired by a fascination with traditional construction methods, materials, and drafting techniques. Using old postcards, blueprints, and paper scraps, I lay a foundation that honors utilitarian construction: crumbling plaster, decaying wrought iron, and archaic technology. I strive to tell stories by building up and stripping down found materials to reveal what is underneath, what comes first, the original plan.

In an age of mass consumption, generative technology, and quick flip homes, my work strives to capture the essence and hidden magic of overlooked and forgotten surfaces. Surfaces both degraded and enhanced by time. It is only when one sees an errant root peeking out in the forest that we can begin to fully comprehend the rich world that lies beneath.

Artist Bio

Gabriel Wilson is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans film, painting, and photography.

Gabriel received his MFA in film from Columbia University and has taught at both Columbia University and Hunter College. His films have screened at film festivals and museums worldwide, including the Sundance and Tribeca Film Festivals.
