Gallery Manager (Part-Time)

Kingston Gallery a vibrant artist-run gallery in the heart of Boston’s dynamic SoWa Arts District, is seeking a part-time Gallery Manager to facilitate the day-to-day operations of the gallery. This role is a unique opportunity to work closely with a talented community of artists while managing a successful cooperative gallery.

As the Gallery Manager, you will coordinate with our membership, guiding the gallery’s operations, exhibitions, and marketing strategies. You will frequently serve as the social media face of the gallery. You will also cultivate and maintain relationships with curators, collectors, art consultants, neighboring galleries, and the press to enhance Kingston Gallery’s visibility and growth. We are looking for someone who is interested in contemporary art, highly organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively. The ability to skillfully communicate with a range of stakeholders is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations & Gallery Management

  • Daily Operations: Facilitate day-to-day gallery operations, maintain efficient workflows, and gallery-sit two times per week. Manage gallery manager email.

  • Meeting Attendance: Participate in monthly Member meetings, Executive Committee meetings, and lead the Marketing Committee.

  • Member Communication & Mentorship: Provide clear updates to members regarding schedules and events, and be a part of the group that offer guidance and mentorship to emerging artists and new members. 

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with gallery leadership and artists to execute long-term strategies for growth and community engagement.

Marketing, Content Creation & PR

  • Social Media and Marketing: Manage and grow Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok presences. Plan and schedule monthly postings. Coordinate email marketing and write newsletters and press releases.

  • Artist Promotion: Partner with marketing team and member artists to organize monthly studio visits and produce behind-the-scenes social media and video content. Meet with the artists of next month’s show to help them plan events and get ideas brewing for promotion.

  • Media & Professional Outreach: Organize exhibition press materials and maintain updated contact lists for regional arts professionals, curators, and collectors. Field gallery and artist inquiries via email, social media, and phone.

Sales, Networking & Event Management

  • Event Hosting: Attend and document First Friday receptions, ensure show materials are ready and printed for the opening, and help plan events designed to attract new audiences and foster community.

  • Relationship Cultivation: Conduct monthly outreach to curators, press, and collectors to boost show visibility and build professional relationships.

  • Sales Growth: Help develop strategies to increase sales.

Required Qualifications:

Strong Communication Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to engage with various stakeholders including artists, press, curators, collectors, and visitors.

Experience & Knowledge

  • At least one year of experience in a gallery setting, arts administration, or a related field.

  • A solid understanding of contemporary art, particularly within the Boston arts community.

  • Familiarity with social media trends and best practices for arts marketing.

Managerial and Organizational Skills

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage competing deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Experience with event planning and community engagement.

Preferred (but not required) Skills: 

  • Proficiency in website management and digital tools (Squarespace, Mailchimp, Eventbrite).

  • Graphic design experience for promotional materials.

Position Details:

  • Start Date: September

  • Hours: Approximately 15 hours/week (flexible, depending on candidate availability and gallery needs).

  • Salary: $25,000 annual base salary, commensurate with experience and hours worked. Commission on artwork sales (subject to a commission threshold.)

  • Gallery Sitting: The Gallery Manager will be required to gallery-sit two times per week.

Marketing Intern

Semester Credit-Based Undergraduate Internship Opportunity
Part-time: 8-10 hours/week

About the Role:

Gain hands-on experience in arts marketing at Kingston Gallery, a dynamic, artist-run cooperative known for showcasing contemporary art. We are looking for a creative and motivated Marketing Intern to join our team. You will work closely with the Gallery Manager and Marketing Committee to engage audiences and boost our online presence. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a respected gallery while honing your marketing skills and bringing your ideas to the gallery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute engaging social media campaigns to increase engagement.

  • Capture photos and videos of exhibitions and events for social media and the gallery website.

  • Promote events by listing them on local digital calendars and community boards.

  • Organize and update contact lists, including buyers, press, and curators.

  • Brainstorm creative marketing strategies to reach new and diverse audiences.

  • Respond to email and social media inquiries about exhibitions and gallery activities.

  • Assist to design and edit newsletters, press releases, and other communications.

  • Help coordinate exhibition events and collaborate with exhibiting artists.

  • Spend one day a week Gallery Sitting (12–5 PM) at Kingston Gallery, working on marketing projects and engaging with visitors.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in marketing and social media, preferably within the contemporary art or creative industries.

  • Knowledge of or interest in the Boston art scene and contemporary art practices.

  • Familiarity with tools such as Google Drive, Mailchimp, Eventbrite, and Squarespace.
