Artist Statement

For me, painting is not a means of illustrating an idea but a way of discovering one. I approach abstraction not as the absence of representation but as a means of expanding it—allowing emotion, memory, and imagination to exist simultaneously. 

Images only emerge through a process of accumulation, erasure, and response, where each mark suggests the next. I am very interested in the way memory functions as fragmented, layered, and constantly reconstructed. Familiar shapes appear like half-remembered forms or fleeting thoughts that dissolve into gestures and color. Color functions as both structure and emotion. Black lines alternately define, interrupt, and destabilize, creating tension between containment and release.

The finished work remains open-ended: a visual conversation between order and improvisation, memory and invention, structure and chance.

Artist Bio

Debra Samdperil is a Boston-based painter whose abstract works investigate memory, perception, and the layered nature of experience. Although she was introduced to art early through her mother's painting practice, she initially pursued photography, working as a photographer and educational media producer before building a career in arts administration in Boston and New York. She returned to painting while earning her BFA from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and now maintains a full-time studio practice in South Boston.

Samdperil's work has been exhibited nationally in solo, two-person, and group exhibitions, including Kingston Gallery in Boston, M. David & Co. and Artcake in Brooklyn, the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, Castle Hill Center for the Arts in Truro, MA and Dab Art in Ventura, CA. She has participated in artist residencies and workshops at Castle Hill Center for the Arts, the Judy Pfaff Foundation Studio Residency in Tivoli, NY, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Montana Artists Refuge, among others. Her work is held in numerous private collections.
