“What is there in the idea of ‘too late?’” This is the question that Henry James identified as the inspirational source of his story The Beast in the Jungle, a tale of soul crushing missed opportunities. My paintings explore the antithesis, imagining painting itself as an arena of endless possibility and surprise. Hence, November Roses, the elastic forms of art, organic, opening themselves as the work progresses until the revelation of a late bloom. When I begin a work I don’t know how it’s going to end and I’m always prepared for enormous changes at the last minute.
