Corey Jonze

What A Sky! Am I In The Other World? Is This Paradise?, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 36 inches, 2024

Artist Statement

I describe my recent work as stylized abstraction. Much of it is built around explosive shapes that push the boundaries of form. Other pieces feature gravity-defying rock-like objects weaving together to create intricate patterns. In each painting I try to invoke a feeling of energy and movement, hoping that the viewer feels like they are transported directly into the work. The usage of color in my paintings is very important. Through the bright, bold colors I try to give a sense of emotion and feeling.

The technical aspect of painting is also a very important part of my painting process. This is seen in the extremely clean line work as well as in the mixtures to create the colors used. The clean line work is done with a steady hand, brush and paint, no additional tools are used. The carefully painted abstract shapes and forms tend to appear as sharp and precise as vector graphics, an intentional decision. Also, a consistent matte sheen is used to enforce the visual consistency of the work.

Wanting to escape the confines of both the canvas and the wall, I have also experimented with sculptural works. I call these works “freestanding paintings.” In these sculptural paintings movement is not only conveyed through the actual painting but also by the shape of the works.
