About
Color has infinite qualities. Artist Jane Lincoln explores these subtle and disparate characteristics in her abstract prints which are a dialogue on the limitless combinations of color leading to surprising revelations.
Jane’s work is inspired by Blanche Lazzell, a founding member of the Provincetown Printers, who developed a woodblock technique over a century ago. With this approach, each color is delineated by a groove in the wood and read as a series of unbroken white lines in the final print. Not only could multiple colors be combined on a single cut block, but in successive prints, the colors of the shapes could be changed.
Jane has adapted this technique to reflect her special sensibility for color and her affinity for the modern grid format. She carves a Shina plywood block and prints on Kochi paper using gouache. The process accepts multiple layers of color for each square which allows for intricate adjustments to the color.
When looking at Jane's prints, colors can meld together or sometimes pop forward and back. They appear soft or intense, quiet or raucous. Together they invite the viewer to discover these limitless qualities for themselves.
