Throughout history, from Raphael, to Picasso, to Kahlo, and Julie Mehretu, there are artists who believe that drawing is the most direct way to encounter an idea. Kara Walker describes drawing as an “intimate conversation, a way of listening to what’s grumbling” inside her body.
This show represents the inner grumblings of fourteen members of the Kingston Gallery, who agree that drawing—whether a preliminary sketch or an endpoint—is integral to their art making. Their visions are richly diverse, but all begin with the connection between hand and paper.
Paul Klee said, “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” We hope you enjoy taking a meandering stroll among the exposed roots of these artists’ practices.
