Stacey Cushner

Efflorescence (aft Van Dael), Oil on Canvas 4x6 ft, 2020

Artist Statement

Stacey Cushner’s work was created out of the study of plant life, trees, flowers, birds and the natural surroundings. Part of her work is in oil where she utilizes layers of old master glazing techniques, applying them slowly - these deepen the effect of the oil paint.  She also draws in graphite or blue color pencil with deliberate marks made in various values, giving the drawing a fullness.

Cushner’s interest in painting and drawing florals and quite often birds grew of the the reverence she has of nature.  She makes her now home in rural Vermont having previously lived in the Boston area.   Her work stems from the fundamental aspect of being wholly present and in the moment.  The pandemic has changed the way we live, life itself is tenuous.  Flowers symbolize rebirth and a second chance.  Cushner seeks to remind viewers of nature’s endless possibilities for adapting and springing forward as well as its regenerative and restorative effect despite the twists and turns of our world.
