On-Kyeong Seong, Surface I, mixed media, machine stitchery on canvas, 40 x 32 inches, 2026

I begin from a sense of fracture and tension felt within. My work engages with abstraction after expression, acknowledging the legacy of gestural painting while moving toward restraint and duration. Rather than asserting emotion through scale or speed, I work through repetition, pressure, and time, using machine stitching as a bodily choreography shaped by rhythm and resistance. Thread passes under pressure, leaving states behind rather than solutions. The stitched lines carry persistence, instability, and the sensation of staying. Forms drawn from nature are translated into abstraction as structure and rhythm. In these works, holding becomes a mode of working shaped by accumulation and care.
