Gallery Artists: Judith Brassard Brown

Artist's Statement

My newest work responds to the insecurity and crisis now consuming us worldwide. I see this crisis centering on conflicts between powers over land and resources, that continues the conflicts of the crusades, between the great religions, between east and west, between those conquering and those conquered.

All these works are 'anti-war'. In making images that build on what has come before: our 'ancestors' of time, place, people and culture, I eliminate artificial boundaries that separate us. There is no ‘here’ or ‘there’, no ‘us’ and ‘them’; instead, there is a shared sense of a common ground and experience.

In these mixed media paintings, you see or sense what has come before. The collage elements are detritus (receipts, notes, love letters, maps, cancelled stamps, found materials, official documents), remnants from every day life from different eras and cultures; In addition, they reference our histories and the people who have come before. Some of the paintings are homages, of sorts, to other artists or to particular kinds of relationships or places. While it may seem odd to have such a wide range of subject and content they are all part of the larger tapestry of life.
