Gallery Artists: Joan Baldwin

Joan is a Boston area artist originally from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She earned her degree at Purdue University and has supplemented her education with a variety of courses and workshops where she has lived in London, Milan, Charlotte NC and Boston.

Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers, including the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Brandeis University in Waltham, University Place Gallery in Cambridge, Hera Gallery in Wakefield, Rhode Island, Brickbottom Gallery in Somerville and three shows at Kingston Gallery. See www.JoanBaldwin.com for more information.

In Joan’s November 2007 exhibit at Kingston Gallery, entitled The Furniture Outside, the oil paintings depict chairs, chandeliers and couches venturing out, trying to establish their relationship with nature and in some paintings the chairs are trying to establish relationships with each other as well. The works, painted in oil on canvas, range in size from 18"x21" to 51"x60".

Joan’s October 2005 exhibit at Kingston Gallery was entitled Room Scenes. The furniture is placed in room settings where she explores psychological themes. The images are rendered in pastel with fabric accents and placed behind actual windows that have been discarded from old houses.

Within the surreal outdoor settings of The Furniture Outside or the indoor settings in Room Scenes, Joan implicates her own personal situations and relationships to others.
